Bobcat E42 Rental Guide for Operating a Mini Excavator
At least half of the Bobcat® excavators you see on job sites are rentals. Why? Because they’re easy to operate, they’re powerful, and they’re perfect for short-term projects. If you’re a contractor or a DIYer and you’re renting a Bobcat E42, here’s how to operate that mini excavator!
Bobcat E42: Why Rent It?
The Bobcat E42 is a 4.8-ton mini excavator. It fits where bigger machines can’t, but it’s also powerful. It can handle anything from trenching to demolition. Most people choose the E42 mini excavator because they need:
- 42.6 hp engine
- Max dump height of
13.7 ft
- Dig depth of 12.4 ft
- Attachment options (buckets, breakers, post-hole augers, etc.)
If you’re debating between the E42 and a smaller model, consider your job site. If you need maneuverability, go smaller. If you need power and reach, the E42 is your best bet.
Bobcat E42 Controls: What You Need to Know
Bobcat’s dual-joystick system was made for precise movements. But don’t worry if you’re used to different control styles. You can easily switch between ISO and SAE patterns. This can save a lot of time, especially if multiple operators will be using the machine.
Push both handles forward to drive ahead. Pull back to reverse. To turn, push one forward while pulling the other back.
Pre-Operation Checklist
Before you start digging, do a quick walkaround check. Here’s a couple key components to look at:
1. Fluid Levels
- Check engine oil, hydraulic fluid, and coolant
- Look at the fuel-water separator (If there’s a floating red ring, there’s water in your fuel system. Fix that before starting the machine)
2. Hydraulic System
- Inspect for leaks or damage:
- Hoses
- Cylinders
- Seals
3. Undercarriage
- Make sure your track tension is correct (Too loose, and it could derail. Too tight, and you’ll see more wear and tear on the machine)
- Remove any debris caught in the undercarriage
4. Engine Compartment
- Look for loose belts, damaged hoses, or disconnected wiring
- Check radiator fins for clogs and secure all latches before starting
5. Safety Features
- Test the seat belt and horn
- Check the lights
- Check the glass in the door and windows, if equipped
- Check heat and A/C, if equipped
Starting Your Mini Excavator
To start the excavator, sit in the operator’s seat and fasten your seat belt. Make sure the hydraulic lockout is engaged (left control console is raised). Make sure the throttle is set at low idle. Turn the key to start the engine. If it’s cold, use the glow plugs. Once the machine’s running, let the engine warm up for a minute before starting your work.
Mini Excavator Operating Techniques
How to Position the Machine
- Dig anywhere from 35° to 45° in front of you
- Park on stable ground to prevent shifting
- For better reach, dig diagonally across corners instead of straight ahead
- Lower the backfill blade. It should slightly raise the front of the excavator off the ground. The blade should be placed in front of you.
How to Work on a Slope
- Always drive straight up and down—never sideways.
How to Do Trench Work
- Start at the top and work in layers. This will go faster than digging straight down.
- The bucket curl force is 10–15% stronger than the stick crowd force.
- Use the depth check system to maintain consistent trenching.
How to Use a Bucket with a Thumb
- Use the hydraulic thumb to grip and secure the materials. Adjust pressure as needed to avoid crushing softer loads.
- Tilt the bucket slightly when picking up objects. This will give you a stabler hold and smoother motion.
- To place the materials, open the thumb gradually. Dump the load, and repeat.
Shutting Down & Storing Your Mini Excavator
Let the engine idle to cool down. Then, lower the boom and bucket flat to the ground. Set all controls to neutral and turn off the engine. Move the control levers to release any remaining hydraulic pressure. Lift the hydraulic control console—this will disengage everything safely.
If you have a long-term rental that goes through the winter, store the machine by placing wooden boards under the tracks to prevent freezing. Keep the machine stored indoors if possible. If temperatures drop below -5°F, switch to 100% Grade 1 diesel for better cold-weather performance, and use a diesel fuel winterizer.
